Castor Oil Pack Instructions

Castor oil packs are used for detoxification of the body. There are several benefits to castor oil being absorbed through the skin, typically on the abdomen. I recommend this mostly commonly for my patients who have either constipation or abdominal discomfort.

Benefits of using castor oil packs include:

  • White blood cells increase which strengthens the immune system.
  • Increases lymph circulation which detoxes the body
  • Reduces swollen lymph glands.
  • Decreased fatigue
  • Decreased depression
  • Increased digestive function

Castor oil packs are used for:

  • uterine fibroids
  • non-malignant ovarian cysts
  • headaches
  • migraines
  • constipation
  • colitis and other intestinal disorders
  • gallbladder and liver conditions
  • arthritis
  • chest colds

Contraindications: Do not use heat directly over uterine growths or ulcers, if you’re pregnant, or while menstruating. You may still do the castor oil pack at this time, just do not add heat over area of concern.

Here is what you’ll need:

Here’s how you do it: Rub castor oil to the treating area and cover with the flannel cloth.  If you are using your own cloth and it is thin, fold it in half for added thickness. To prevent the oil from staining your clothes, cover the flannel with a small plastic bag. Place heat source over plastic bag that is covering the flannel. This will heat the area to open up the circulation to increase blood flow to the area to allow the castor oil to penetrate.  Relax for 30 minutes. While not quite as effective, you may do the castor oil pack with out the heat but should leave the pack on for an hour.

If doing general therapeutic castor oil pack treatments, rub the castor oil onto the liver and the entire abdomen. The liver is located on the right side of the body underneath the ribs and breast area.

*The flannel or wool cloth may be used for 9-12 months before needing a new one.  If the oil has stained your clothes you may try washing it in a solution of 3 tablespoons baking soda per quart of water, or you can follow these instructions.
